I am in Taipei!
My third day in Taipei and am loving it. In many ways Taipei reminds me of Seoul - never lacking of variety and choice, lively, so much cheaper compared to Australia, fantastic food and the people are educated and friendly. This city has changed so much from 5-6 years ago. As Taipei is not my (part) hometown, and has only been here 3-4 times previously, I admit I was quite lost initially. Doesn't help with my natural direction stupidity and the big change Taipei has gone through. Ended up walking a lot.
As I came during a non-peak period, the hostel I am staying at was quite quiet. I have made a couple of new friends but have not travelled with them. So most of the time I am by myself. Mum asked me not to trouble relatives and friends. My friends are either 1) not in Taipei, 2) not in Taiwan at all (many in AU, some in Korea and one went abroad to europe a couple weeks ago). Down on my luck. But I like being by myself anyway.
I just tried speaking Mandarin properly instead of my usual Singaporean way, throwing in a couple of min nan dialect occasionally. I walk around just like a local, and the people think I am Taiwanese as well. I thought I may dress a little different from them though. Taiwanese style is casual, but street smart. I actually like their style.
Done heaps of shopping over the past 2 days. 3 tops, 1 pair of jeggings, 1 dress, stationary, 1 pair of shoes. Heaps of food. I am so much poorer now, and my luggage space is shrinking rapidly too.
I am procrastinating here because I have really tired feet. Supposed to get up to Yangmingshan national park today. Hopefully I can get there just past noon time. Plan today also include Shilin night market.
2 more days left here. Time passes by so quickly when you are holidaying and having fun. I really wish I can have a longer break.........
No photos at the moment because they are all in my camera and I do not have a laptop to upload them to (or a USB or store them if I use the hostel's computer). Will update when I get back to Melbourne.
