Updates -- & The ABC Tour + Nelly visits Melbourne!
Sorry folks, I haven't been updating my blog at all... First things first, I've been really really busy. Freaking stressed with my 2 major assignments, which doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I am not motivated to do anything at all... And I've just been watching some drama (currently hooked to "It started with a kiss" by Ariel Lin and Joe Cheng), sleeping, idling..... not very productive. Also, I was waiting for my classmates to send some photos to me too...
Really don't feel like doing my assignments. I still have another 5mins presentation to prepare for Thursday's class, which I think is really redundant. It is assessed, so I can't just ignore it. But but but.... so many things to do!!! ARGH.... I got really sick of researching...

Last Tuesday, 10 October 2006, my classmates and I went to ABC (Australian Broadcasting Cooperation) and an ABC broadcaster Barry Clarke came to tour us around the 4 storey building. Barry has given us a lecture a couple of weeks back, and therefore granted us permission to enter ABC to have a look.
We first started off at the Broadcasting department. Had a look around ABC Radio, and meeting with Dianne, an Indonesian broadcaster, and she talked to us about her job, how she need to go for interviews and source for news and prepare and edit them. She needs to start work as early as 5 in the morning! She's quite a friendly lady. Next, Barrie led us to another studio and showed us how they do editing of interviews and how they broadcast. It was so fun!! We got an insight of how broadcasters work and operate within a small studio -- something I've wanted to learn and know all along~ So thrilling~~
Next Nan, Candy, Vivien and I talked to Jin Jin, who deals with the Chinese department of ABC Radio, whilst the other non-Chinese speakers followed Barry. I feel that my mandarin is way behind those mainland Chinese... Doubt I can try broadcasting in Chinese. Even though I think my mandarin is not bad, but I can never be compared to those who have Chinese as their first language. Furthermore, people usually prefer the Beijing accent more than a Taiwanese one. Many people I know said I have a Taiwanese accent, probably adopted from my mom.. But, I can never speak Chinese like how the Northern Chinese do... I can't even understand them!
We then went to the News department, and saw in real time how this guy selected and edited the news, sort them out, and got them ready in time for the broadcaster to read the 4pm news. We witnessed the entire process til the broadcaster went inside and got herself ready, counting down the minutes to 4pm, played the introductory music, and she gave her introductory speech and then she went through the headline, then reading the very first news about North Korea and its nuclear sanctions. Interesting.
Our last stop was the TV. We went into the set where the news reader sits every 7pm when ABC airs its evening news, as well as the control area. WOOT.. the settings there was just WOW. The table at which the news reader sits every night looks so shabby. Everything looks quite shabby, yet on TV they look great. How bizarre~
It was a 2 hours worth of tour... Much much more worth it than our SBS tour! We paid AUD$66 for our SBS tour just to sit inside the conference room most of the time listening to a lecture, whereas ABC was free and we learnt so much and saw so much. It was great~ Barry Clarke was really friendly and so willing to show us around. He was a great host and great company.

Before ABC tour, me, YC, Peach and Nan met up for lunch. I suggested going to a Korean restaurant, just up Bourke Street - Kimchi Grandma... I ordered Yu Gae Jang... It wasn't too bad.

Tuesday 17 October --
Met up with Nelly... She came to visit me and another friend here in Melbourne! How nice of her~ She took a break from her attachment work at Ayers Rock and came to Melbourne... So I met up with her today (despite that I should be at home doing assignments! but heck..) and we went to Chadstone and did some shopping! Nelly said that there is no shopping centre in Ayers Rock. The nearest shopping centre is at Alice Springs, and they will need to drive about 4 hours there..... So she did lots of shopping in Chadstone! By the time we went for our movies, she's already carrying lots of bags, big and small... and I'm STILL empty-handed... lol...
Went to watch "The Devil Wears Prada" by Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. It was an AWESOME movie! Loved loved loved LOVED it! I wasn't bored at any moment, and it was intriguing, and I love to see all the outfits that they are wearing, PLUS the intensity of working with Runway. It's all true in a way. Very interesting. Both leads were awesome too~ Great actresses. Recommended!!
After the movies, all the shops were closed already, except Borders, so we went inside and looked at some books and CDs. Leon came to fetch us and we went to Boxhill, where he and Rebecca lives. Fetched Rebecca there, and we went to have dinner at Glen Waverly. I recommended Bob's Kitchen to them but there are just so many people waiting! So we ended up going to Yummy Kitchen, where they have authentic Beijing dumplings. We ordered 3 serves of dumplings, total 45 of them! Besides that, we ordered Hot Plate Mongolian Beef, Shandong chicken, Spicy chicken and a dish of vegetables. AND, a bottle of pinot noir shared amongst the 4 of us. Very full after that... It was great catching up with Leon and Rebecca too... haven't seen them in quite some while. Except that Leon's mandarin is too difficult to understand. He's from Shandong... and his accent... WHEW... I really have to ask twice before I can understand...
Nelly will be back to Ayers Rock Friday morning. Will miss her! She might drop by Singapore again in January next year, just for a couple of days. Maybe I'll show her around again :)

FINALLY, I finished watching "Silence" (Shen qing mi ma) and I cried and cried and cried at the ending. It was really a sad one... Well not a sad SAD one, but it's still sad.... so... I couldn't control my emotions and cried like a baby. "What a drama queen", right? Yeah.. I guess I am! Now going on to yet another Taiwanese drama -- "It Started with a Kiss". It's really funny, quite lame at times though, but yet entertaining enough. Good destress stuff.
